Anne Whiston Spim - Writer & Photographer.   'The Eye is a Door'

I am inspired by Spim's writing and how she explains that the camera is the photographer's eye.  How light and colour is interpreted by the photographer in a poetic style.

In her introduction below she explains how each chapter of her book explains in depth what her camera means to her and how imagery holds a story.  Spim explains that the camera is her third eye and the camera frames her visual thinking.

Her book title 'The Eye is A Door', captured my attention at first when researching door photography, however the book is more directed at visual thinking and how imagery can be misunderstood from visual illiteracy.  An image can hold more than one story for different viewers.  So much can be missed and neglected if not observed and focused mindfully.

I have not read the book in full, but I have found some passages invaluable in my research.

A door is a passageway and threshold to cross over into a new beginning.

'Seeing the world with fresh eyes'

This book teaches us how to read and analyse imagery.   Helping the viewer to engage their view, not just to  glance, but to gaze and look deeper. To engage our minds and to feel textures and patterns.

It reminds us that our minds are full of mental activity that obscure us from seeing in a contemplative way.
